Jing & I

from Eschaton by Ian Rushton

lyrics

The streets are cold tonight
Frozen winds are blowing
Telling all who'll listen
Winter will soon be coming

Shelters filled up early
No room for Jing and me
Asked if we could wait till May
Gave us some soup and coffee

We've been traveling together
For a couple of years
Looking out for each other
Sharing our food and tears

Jing has a nasty cough
She's wearing the extra shirt
We know a kindly guard
Lets us borrow a patch of dirt

She's started crying again
Lost a child in a forgotten war
Bury my ghosts with two dollar gin
Hers keep coming back for more

Long cold nights are always the worst
Don't care for all the talking time
Private emotions come to surface
Her hell gets confused with mine

She starts shaking and groaning
Just an hour before the dawn
I hold her close to warm her
By morning she was gone

I need the clothes Jing's wearing
Shakes and tears won't let me
Left her name with unsure spelling
Now her troubles are mine to carry

We've been traveling together
For a couple of years
Looking out for each other
Sharing our food and tears

The streets are cold tonight
Frozen winds are blowing
Telling all who'll listen
Winter will soon be coming
